This Level 3 Programme will take the basics of Te Reo Māori you have already learnt, into the next step. Our safe, encouraging, immersive, bilingual, and interactive programme will take you further along your Te Reo Māori journey and is loved by people from all cultures and backgrounds.

You will develop a greater understanding of the Māori culture while you practice and build confidence in your Māori language skills. Learn alongside others at the same level and have fun while you’re doing it.

In this programme you’ll learn a variety of sentence structures using Te Reo Māori in a range of formal and informal situations. You’ll be able to explain and practice tikanga Māori as well as learning a range of waiata and karakia.

When you finish the course, you’ll have the confidence to advance into full-immersion learning.

You will learn:

  • Intermediate language skills
  • Confidence to communicate in Te Reo Māori

Upon successful completion of the Level 3 programme, you will progress into Level 4.  Once you have completed both levels, you will receive the following qualification:

  • New Zealand Certificate in Te Reo (Reo Rua) Level 4

Reremahi: An introduction to active sentence structures using tense markers and the opportunity to use these sentences about present, past, and future action.        

Whakakāhoretanga: An introduction to negative action sentences structures using tense markers and the opportunity to use these sentences to negate active sentences in everyday activities.

Tōku Ao:  Give instructions using passive commands, responding appropriately and demonstrate understanding of the use of postposed periphery particles in te reo Māori such as pea, tonu anō and kē.

Rerehāngū:  Use passive sentence structures with tense markers, to construct passive sentences about the present, past, and future action, and describe an ability or inability to do certain actions.

Te Reo Māori skills will be useful in everyday life in Aotearoa. They'll also be great if you work in education, Māori organisations, media or anywhere you deal with the public.  You can put your Te Reo Māori skills to use in most jobs in Aotearoa.

Graduates of this qualification will be able to:

  • Use Te Reo Māori vocabulary and grammatical structures at an advanced - intermediate level
  • Use Te Reo Māori at an intermediate-level to show an understanding of their connections to the land and the environment, prominent places, people, histories and stories, as an expression of mana whenua
  • Use Te Reo Māori at an intermediate-level in selected contexts to develop a growing knowledge base of, and an emerging respect for Te Reo, as an expression of mana reo
  • Use Te Reo Māori at an intermediate-level to achieve tasks and guide others in specified contexts as an expression of mana ao turoa
  • To provide akonga with the opportunity to communicate independently in Te Reo Māori in familiar, and some less familiar situations
  • To provide akonga with the opportunity to communicate with fluency and increasing flexibility in everyday whanau, marae, social/community, workplace and/or academic contexts, and in broader aspects of Te Ao Māori
  • To promote and encourage the use of Te Reo Māori as the language of choice
  • To increase and nurture knowledge of Te Reo Māori and Tikanga Māori
  • To help akonga gain confidence and competence in Te Reo Māori with a strong focus on korerorero
  • To provide akonga with the skills to participate and understand Māori protocols and practice
  • To contribute positively to the development of Te Reo kia tika, kia rere, kia Māori or have a personal and/or professional interest in Te Reo Māori
  • To provide a pathway for entry to higher level qualifications either internally with TWoA or externally with other providers
  • To provide an employment pathway to the diverse spaces within Te Ao Māori
  • To build a harmonious nation and provide access to Te Reo Māori for all

Applicants should be a minimum of 16 years of age (unless an exemption from attending school has been granted) at the commencement of the programme. An exemption from attending school may be granted by a person designated under sections 21 or 26 of the Education Act 1989, by a school principal from a school in which the prospective tauira is registered, or by the Chief Executive of the Ministry of Education.

Open entry, however, applicants should have little or no knowledge of Te Reo Māori and must attend an information sharing hui with a Kaiako before enrolment.

Language Requirements

Applicants from countries with an annual student visa approval rate below 80 per cent, whose first language is not English, or who come from a country where the language of instruction in schools is not English must provide evidence of:

Have gained NCEA Level 3 and met New Zealand University Entrance requirements, or

Have successfully completed a Bachelors Degree, Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma, Bachelor Honours degree, Postgraduate Certificate, Postgraduate Diploma, Master’s Degree or Doctoral Degree, the language of instruction of which must be in English and which must be from a tertiary education provider from New Zealand, Australia, Canada, the Republic of Ireland, South Africa, the United Kingdom or the United States, or

Have achieved a Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults, CELTA, or

Have achieved the required score and with all scores achieved in a single test in one of the internationally recognised English Proficiency tests (specified above) within the preceding two years.

Successful completion of one of the following internationally recognised proficiency tests listed below to the level required of the programme of study and with all scores achieved in a single test during the preceding two years:

  • IELTS test - Academic score of 5 with no band score lower than 5
  • TOEFL Paper based test (pBT) – Score of 500 (with an essay score 4 TWE)
  • TOEFL Internet- based test (iBT) – Score of 35 (with a writing score of 14)
  • University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations – FCE or FCE for schools with a score of 154.  No less than 154 in each skill. OET at Grade C in all sub-tests
  • NZCEL a) To be discontinued on 31 December 2019 Level 3 General or Workplace, b) Current Level 3 General
  • Pearson Test of English (Academic) – PToE (Academic score of 36)
  • City and Guilds IESOL – B1 Achiever with a score of 43
  • Language CertB1 Achiever IESOL (LRWS with PASS)

An NZQA approved English Language proficiency test, where the student has achieved an outcome that is equivalent or better than those scores listed for Internationally recognised English language proficiency tests above in relation to the level of intended programme of study, or

Completion of all primary education and at least three years’ secondary education at schools with English as the language of instruction, or

Completion of five years of secondary education at schools with English as the language of instruction.  

Aim of this course:

  • To provide ākonga with the knowledge and skills to converse in Te Reo Māori at an intermediate level.
  • To provide ākonga with the skills to communicate in Te Reo Māori with some independence and confidence in everyday whanau, marae, social/community, workplace and/or academic contexts; and in Māori environments where they feel comfortable.
  • To contribute positively to the development of Te Reo kia tika, kia rere, kia Māori or have a personal and/or professional interest in Te Reo Māori
  • To provide a pathway for entry to higher level qualifications
  • To provide an employment pathway to the diverse spaces within Te Ao Māori
  • To build a harmonious nation and provide access to Te Reo Māori for all.

To successfully complete the New Zealand Certificate in Te Ara Reo Māori (He Pī Ka Rere) (Level 4) programme of study students will need:

  • To have completed 60 credits from the Level 3 Programme schedule for the New Zealand Certificate in Te Reo (Level 4).
  • A minimum of 120 credits in accordance with the Qualification schedule for the New Zealand Certificate in Te Ara Reo Māori (He Pī Ka Rere) (Level 4). 
  • The student will normally be expected to complete the New Zealand Certificate in Te Ara Reo Māori (He Pī Ka Rere) (Level 4) programme of study full-time over one year or part-time over two years.
